4×4 Raised Bed Plant Calculator

4×4 Raised Bed Plant Calculator

Counts whole spacing positions; wide-spaced crops are not forced to one plant per square foot.

Estimate crop capacity in a compact 4-by-4-foot raised bed.

Grid formula: floor(length in inches ÷ plant spacing) × floor(width in inches ÷ plant spacing).

The calculator now counts positions, not square feet

Wide-spaced crops must not be forced to one plant per square foot. For example, tomatoes at 24-inch spacing in a 4×8 bed give floor(96÷24) × floor(48÷24) = 4 × 2 = 8 simplified grid positions.

Grid spacing and traditional rows are different

The result also reports a row-based scenario when the crop has separate row-spacing data. Trellises, access, airflow and sprawling vines may justify using fewer plants than either theoretical layout.

Planning a compact 4×4 bed

A 4×4 bed has 16 square feet and can usually be reached from every side without stepping into the soil. At 24-inch spacing a simple grid gives 2 × 2 = 4 positions; at 12 inches it gives 4 × 4 = 16. Use the crop selector to see how quickly capacity changes with spacing.
