Container Water Planning Calculator

Container Water Planning Calculator

Converts a chosen water depth over square feet using about 0.623 gallon per square-foot-inch.

Use a small-area water-volume estimate as a planning reference for grouped containers.

Conversion: 1 inch of water over 1 square foot ≈ 0.623 US gallon.

Worked example

A 4×8 bed has 32 square feet. At a one-inch target, 32 × 0.623 = 19.94, so the volume is about 19.9 gallons.

This is water depth, not a fixed weekly prescription

Rainfall, soil texture, mulch, crop stage and weather change how often irrigation is needed. Use the result to translate a chosen depth into gallons.

The conversion is useful when comparing an irrigation target with a measured bed area. It does not decide how often a crop should be watered; soil texture, rainfall, rooting depth and weather still control frequency.
